California Poppy Day coincides with the date the California poppy was designated as the official California state flower, April 6, 1903 (California Government Code – GOV § 421). Sarah Plummer Lemmon, an American botanist, pushed for the adoption of the golden poppy as the state flower back in 1890, eventually writing the bill that passed. It was also selected as the state flower by the California State Floral Society in December 1890, beating out its competitors the Mariposa lily and the Matilija poppy.
