School Site Council

What is the School Site Council (SSC)?

The School Site Council (SSC) is a team of parents, teachers, school staff, and community members who work together to support student success and improve school performance.

SSC is required in all California public schools under state law and plays an important role in school decision-making.

What Does the SSC Do?

Develop and review school plans
The SSC helps create and update the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), which outlines goals and strategies to improve academic outcomes and school climate.

Monitor how funds are used
The council reviews and approves the use of categorical funding to ensure resources are aligned to student needs.

Review school progress
Members look at student data, including academic performance and other indicators, to monitor progress toward school goals.

Who Serves on the SSC?

The SSC includes a balanced group of school and community representatives:

  • Parents or guardians (majority at the elementary level)
  • Teachers
  • Classified staff
  • The principal
  • Students (at the high school level)

The number of parent members must be equal to the number of school staff. Elementary SSCs typically include 10 members, while secondary councils include at least 12 members.
