Dual Immersion

Lake Elsinore Unified School District (LEUSD) offers a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program, where students receive instruction in both Spanish and English. Students develop literacy and learn academic content in both languages, supporting strong communication skills in a global society.

Dual Language Immersion programs promote bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and multicultural awareness for all students. In LEUSD, the program begins at Railroad Canyon Elementary, continues at Elsinore Middle School, and extends into Temescal Canyon High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and Diploma.

Program Pathway and Goals

The Dual Immersion Program offers an added level of rigor, preparing students for advanced language development from elementary through high school. This pathway supports students in building strong academic and language skills over time.

The goals of the Dual Immersion Program at Railroad Canyon Elementary are to:

  • Develop high levels of proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in both Spanish and English
  • Achieve strong academic performance across all content areas
  • Build understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures
  • Strengthen cross-cultural communication skills and a sense of global citizenship
  • Support the ability to learn and communicate across the curriculum in two languages

The program begins with a strong foundation in Spanish and gradually transitions to a balanced approach in Spanish and English by grades 4–5. Language learning continues at Elsinore Middle School and Temescal Canyon High School, where students further develop Spanish language and literacy skills.

By their senior year, students may earn special recognition such as the State Seal of Biliteracy, demonstrating proficiency in two languages and readiness for college, career, and global opportunities.

California State Seal of Biliteracy

The State Seal of Biliteracy is an official recognition awarded by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to graduating high school students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages in addition to English.

This recognition is indicated by a gold seal affixed to the student’s diploma or transcript, signifying readiness for college, career, and global opportunities.
