Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is more than online safety—it’s about helping students make thoughtful, responsible choices when using technology. At Lake Elsinore Unified School District, we support students in building the skills they need to think critically, communicate respectfully, and engage safely in an increasingly connected world.

We work with schools, teachers, and families to ensure students understand how to use technology in ways that are safe, responsible, and aligned with positive digital behavior both in and outside of the classroom.

What Students Learn

Digital citizenship instruction helps students develop essential skills, including:

  • Online safety and protecting personal information
  • Responsible use of technology and digital tools
  • Media and digital literacy
  • Positive and respectful online communication
  • Understanding screen time and healthy digital habits

Instructional Support

LEUSD provides guidance and resources to support the integration of digital citizenship into classroom learning across all grade levels. These lessons help students apply safe and responsible technology practices in real-world situations and across all subject areas.

Teachers may incorporate digital citizenship into instruction through classroom lessons, discussions, and guided activities that support safe, ethical, and effective technology use.

Resources by Grade Level

Digital citizenship skills are introduced and reinforced across grade levels to support student growth over time:

  • Grades TK–2: Foundational skills such as safe use of technology and basic online behavior
  • Grades 3–5: Building awareness of digital footprint, privacy, and respectful communication
  • Grades 6–8: Developing critical thinking, media literacy, and responsible online interactions
  • Grades 9–12: Preparing students for digital responsibility in college, careers, and everyday life

Support for Families

Families play an important role in helping students develop healthy digital habits. LEUSD provides resources to support conversations at home around:

  • Online safety
  • Social media use
  • Screen time balance
  • Responsible digital behavior

We encourage families to stay engaged and partner with schools to reinforce safe and positive technology use.
