We’re committed to supporting every student’s learning and growth throughout the year. Assessments are one of the many tools we use to understand what students know, where they are making progress, and how we can continue to support their success.

Throughout the school year, students will participate in a variety of assessments that provide valuable information for teachers, families, and students. These assessments help guide instruction, monitor progress, and ensure that every student receives the support they need to meet their goals.

We share this calendar to keep families informed and help you feel prepared. The dates below provide a general timeline of assessments across the district. Your child’s teacher or school may share additional details specific to your site.

We understand that assessments can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our goal is to approach testing in a way that supports students, builds confidence, and reflects their learning in meaningful ways.

Assessment Matrix

This matrix-style table provides a detailed breakdown of each assessment window, including the name of the assessment as it appears within the platform. It lists in detail the common assessment name (Focused Interim Assessments or FIAB, or the Reading Difficult Risk Screener assessment) for each assessment window. It’s designed to support test coordinators, coaches, and teachers who need precise information about what to administer and where to find it.

CAASPP

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) system includes state assessments that measure how well students are progressing toward college and career readiness. These assessments provide important information about student learning in subjects such as English language arts and mathematics. Results help teachers better understand student needs, adjust instruction, and provide additional support where needed. For families, CAASPP results offer a snapshot of your child’s progress and can help guide conversations about learning and growth throughout the year. While these assessments are one part of your child’s educational experience, they are just one of many ways we measure success and support student achievement.

Key Measurements

CAASPP is a key measure of student progress, and participation is critical for several reasons:

School and District Performance: Schools are required to meet the federal 95% participation threshold under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Low participation can impact a school’s overall performance rating.
Funding and Resources: Nonparticipation can influence funding and affect the resources available to students.
Data Accuracy: The more students who participate, the more reliable and complete our understanding of student learning becomes. This data helps improve instruction, curriculum, and student support programs.
College and Career Readiness: For 11th graders, strong CAASPP performance can demonstrate college readiness and can allow students to be exempt from placement tests at California State Universities (CSU) and participating community colleges. Additionally, students who take the English Language Arts assessment and the Spanish assessment in 11^th grade can use qualifying scores to meet the requirements for the California State Seal of Biliteracy.
CAASPP includes several assessments designed to evaluate different subject areas and student needs:
Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC): Measures English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics proficiency for students in grades 3–8 and 11.
California Science Test (CAST): Assesses scientific knowledge in alignment with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for students in grades 5, 8, and once in high school.
California Alternate Assessments (CAA): Designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities, these assessments cover English Language Arts, Mathematics (grades 3–8 and 11), and Science (grades 5, 8, and once in high school).
California Spanish Assessment (CSA): Evaluates reading/language arts skills in Spanish for students in grades 3–8 and high school enrolled in a dual language program (optional).
